AMSTERDAM—Locoregional radiotherapy to the internal mammary and medial supraclavicular lymph nodes in women who had already been treated successfully for their breast cancer with standard regimens — including surgery, radiotherapy and, when needed, chemotherapy — saved lives in the long term in a study reported at the 2013 European Cancer Conference here (September 30-October 1).
Professor Ian Kunkler MRCP, FRCR, FRCPE, FRSM, from Edinburgh Cancer Centre, University of Edinburgh, Western General Hospital, Scotland, commented on the findings of the EORTC Radiation Oncology and Breast Cancer Groups phase III trial 22922-10925 which randomized 4004 patients between 1996 and 2004 who had no metastatic disease at entry and had either axillary node involvement or medially located primary tumors to receive chest nodal irradiation or usual care.
